At the Santa Reparata International School of Art, the well-being of our students is at the heart of everything we do. Studying abroad is a transformative experience—one filled with creative exploration, personal growth, and meaningful cultural exchange. We also understand that being far from home can come with emotional challenges. That’s why mental health support is a cornerstone of the student experience at SRISA.
A Culture of Care
Our community is built on the values of respect, openness, and mutual support. We foster an environment where students feel seen, heard, and encouraged—not only in the classroom but in every aspect of their lives in Florence. Whether you’re adjusting to a new culture, navigating the pressures of academic life, or just need someone to talk to, you’re never alone at SRISA.
Emotional Wellness While Studying Abroad
Mental and emotional well-being abroad is just as important as physical well-being. Before you go, speak with your Study Abroad Advisor about any pre-existing conditions you may have experienced before or are currently experiencing. This will help ensure that SRISA has the appropriate resources ready for you upon arrival. Try these tips to keep on a good mental and emotional track:
- Eat well, observe healthy sleep habits, and exercise. Remind yourself that a balanced life is a happy life and that sleep and nutritious meals are important!
- Don’t forget about your family or friends back home (reach out and check in!)
- Journal. Writing down your thoughts, feelings, and interpretations can be incredibly therapeutic and helpful for processing all the changes going on. Plus, it’s a great way to look back on your adventures and growth.
- Take time for yourself. It’s okay to “take a night off” and stay in every once in a while with a book or film and a cup of tea.
- Know that you are not alone! If your new situation starts to feel too overwhelming, reach out to us at sos@srisa.org or contact someone on campus you trust, and we will get you the help you need.
Professional Mental Health Resources
To ensure students have access to the care they need, we collaborate with a local, independent counselor who offers one-on-one sessions in a confidential and welcoming setting. Students can schedule appointments directly with the counselor, empowering them to seek support when they need it most.
We also maintain a curated list of English-speaking mental health professionals in Florence, available to all students as an additional resource. These professionals offer a range of services, from talk therapy to specialized support, making it easier for students to find the right fit for their individual needs.
Health Coverage That Prioritizes Mental Health
In preparation for their time abroad, all SRISA students are required to arrive with comprehensive health insurance. We strongly advise that students choose a plan that includes mental health coverage. Doing so ensures that they can fully access the support systems in place, both within SRISA and in the wider community. Consult the Pre-departure Handbook or check out our Pre-departure page for links to coverage and other resources.
Flourishing in Florence
Our goal is for every student to thrive—creatively, academically, and personally. By providing access to professional support and cultivating a campus culture grounded in empathy and care, we help students navigate the ups and downs of studying abroad with confidence.
At SRISA, mental wellness isn’t an afterthought—it’s a vital part of the journey.
