Salvini

Though the allure of cheap house supplies and notebooks may dominate a study-abroad student’s mind, there’s another spot that the SRISA student needs to know: Salvini.

Salvini is a quaint art shop not too far of a walk away from campus off Via Degli Alfani. It maintains a warm atmosphere with a light-brown palette of color on a simple sign out front.

When one walks into Salvini they’re immediately seeing large varieties of papers organized by name and weight in the back (which is incredibly important for classes like Printmaking), and someone is always behind the counter greeting you with a “ciao”.

The actual shop itself is quite snug. If there are more than about 4 customers demanding attention, it feels very crowded. What I have noticed, though, is that this place is a hot-spot for art students of all backgrounds. From English-speakers to local Italians, plenty of artists come here for nice micron pens, mid-tone paper, or high-quality copic markers. There’s solidarity among artists, because although it can be an overwhelming experience purchasing materials in a tight-space—everyone is always incredibly excited to explore the product.

What is the major selling-point of Salvini’s importance to a SRISA student’s life is that they also offer a discount for their goods. The weighted paper you may need for printmaking might be sold for €1,20—but you’re only purchasing it for €1.

Most everyone attending SRISA has visited Salvini at least twice a week to pick up supplies. You can get lost in here. Imagine a local, Italian, high-end version of Micheal’s that strictly sells art-supplies. To incoming SRISA students: get pumped for Salvini’s products. To past SRISA students: I’m sure you find yourself reminiscing about the Salvini-printed brown wrapping around your new pristine paper.
